Obliquely inspired by the ‘Weather Eye’ writings of Brendan McWilliams*, I embarked on a year-long project to explore the transitory things in the Connemara landscape like clouds, the weather, the seasons and the tides. From the first of January 2009 I took a photograph of the same number scenes at the same time every day for an entire year. The project was about observing change, and the possibilities of re-presentation.
The ‘Connemara Weather Eye 2009’ project records a number of locations around Letterfrack and the Renvyle peninsula, four of which I have published on this website.
‘Ceann na Dumhaigh’ is in the townland of Ardnagreevagh near Renvyle point and this view looks straight out to Clare Island.
‘Bun Na Bacai’ bog is between Kylemore and Letterfrack just off the N59 and under the shadow of Diamond Hill.
Tully Pier or ‘Gurteen’ is just north of Tully village. This scene looks across the span of Killary Harbour towards Mweelrea mountain.
'Fiortaí’ is the bog just east of Derryinver bridge looking towards Diamond Hill.
