Arctic Phenomenon

Greenland has a remarkable landscape. It is 96.8% covered by glacier or icecap. In 2004, I made two video works on phenomenon particular to the Arctic; I shot the footage for these works in the Ammassalik area in East Greenland.

The piece ‘Moving Icecap’ challenges or perception of landscape as an inert entity.

‘Kayak dizziness’ or ‘nangiartarneq’ is a condition of spatial disorientation suffered by kayakers in calm seas, or in conditions where a visual reference point to the land is lost. A kayaker can suffer from sensory and perceptual deprivation resulting in a feeling of floating in space.

The project was funded by the Arts Council of Ireland/ An Chomhairle Ealaíon and a ‘Folkatronica’ residency from Visual Artists Ireland.
